Saffron is mainly distinguished by size and shape of its stigmas. In the market it is reflected in 4 main groups:
- Premium All Red (whole stigmas and red)
- All Red Cuts
- Regular Threads
- Bunch
Each has it's own unique shape and value, which you find them in below:
Premium All Red Threads: Long, Unbroken deep red threads
All Red Cuts: Shorter red stigmas but pure red color
Regular Threads: A natural mix of red stigmas with lighter part at the tail included.
Bunch: From the Red-Head till the white-bottom of saffron stigmas, commonly supplied as tied together
Saffron can also be classified based on the method of drying used after harvest.
Machine-Pressed Drying
In this method, the stigmas are flattened during drying, giving them a wider and smoother appearance. It creates a very uniform look, often chosen for its neat presentation.
Traditional Drying
Here, the saffron is dried naturally without machines, so the threads keep their natural curves and fine details. This method is often valued for its authenticity and artisanal touch.
